In 1644, Li Zicheng (also known as Chuang Wang) led a grand army in an effort to overturn the Ming court. He could not breach the Badaling Pass, and instead aimed for the Shixia Pass. After Li’s force defeated the vanguard force of the Ming court, they set up a barrack outside the Shixia Pass, and within the barrack was the military command center. In March, the official battle began, and Li’s force won the victory by a single blow. Li breached the Badaling line of defense and led his troops straight to Beijing.
